Abstract：Magnetars are very strongly magnetised neutron stars, with magnetic field strengths in excess of 10^14 Gauss. In this talk I will describe the physics that determines the spin evolution of rapidly rotating (millisecond) magnetars, early in their lives. The results have implications for their gravitational wave emission, and for the distributions of spins and magnetic field geometries observed in the Galactic magnetar population.
